Working Conditions


If you are selected for a position, you will be required to go through Embassy security and medical clearance procedures prior to your final appointment.

The U.S. Embassy does not provide any notice if you are not called for an interview.

  • Working hours: 8:30 - 17:30 (8 hours)
  • Holidays: Saturday, Sunday, Japanese and U.S. Holidays


NOTE:

Working hours/holidays for some positions may be different from the above because of specific duties and responsibilities. You will be notified at the interview if the hours of duty vary.

  • Annual and Sick leave: 13 days each per year
  • Health Insurance/Kosei Nenkin: Not provided, but there is a subsidy for Kokumin Nenkin Kikin from the U.S. Government
  • Labor Insurance: Under Japanese Labor Insurance regulations
  • Probationary Period: One year
  • Severance pay: Provided
  • Retirement Age: Mandatory at age 65
  • Salary: Starting salary will be determined according to U.S. government regulations.
  • Other:

    1. Salary is paid in yen and includes all allowances, i.e. transportation, fringe benefits etc.
    2. The U.S. Government does not withhold Japanese income tax. Therefore, each employee has the responsibility to file income tax in accordance with Japanese Government law.
    3. Federal tax, Social Security, and Medicare are deducted for those employees holding U.S. residence status.
