Ambassador Addresses Midwest U.S.-Japan Association Conference

Sep. 10 - Ambassador Schieffer addressed the 39th annual meeting of the Midwest U.S.-Japan Association and met with senior representatives of the American delegation. U.S. Navy Participates in Earthquake Drill

Sep. 1 - At the request of the Tokyo Metropolitan government, the USS Tortuga, in conjunction with the Japan Maritime Self Defense Force, assisted in evacuating Japanese citizens as part of Japan's annual earthquake drill during its recent port visit to Tokyo.

DHS Under Secretary Cohen Visits Japan

July 30 - Ambassador J. Thomas Schieffer (at right) welcomes Jay Cohen, Under Secretary of the Science and Technology Directorate of the Homeland Security Dept., at the start of his visit to Tokyo. Cohen met with Japanese leaders and led a July 31 seminar at Tokyo American Center on "Enhancing Domestic Security thorugh Global Collaboration." [More]


Ambassador Authorizes Support to Aid Earthquake Victims

July 17 - Ambassador Schieffer expressed the sympathy and concern of the United States for the victims of the July 16 earthquake in Niigata and Nagano, and authorized the disbursal of $100,000 in disaster relief. U.S. Forces, Japan (USFJ) also provided material support to the earthquake victims. [More]


   
Ambassador Schieffer traveled to Niigata on July 18 to offer support to earthquake victims.     79 air conditioning units donated by the U.S. were installed at 21 disaster relief centers; 17 additional air conditioners were donated.


Ambassador Meets Defense Minister Yuriko Koike

July 11 - Ambassador Schieffer paid a courtesy call on Japan's new Defense Minister Yuriko Koike at the Ministry of Defense.

Yomiuri International Economic Society

June 15 - Ambassador Schieffer gave an address at a meeting of the Yomiuri International Economic Society in Tokyo, and he later met legendary baseball organizers from the Yomiuri Giants team.

   


Ambassador Meets Cherry Blossom Queens

May 23 - Ambassador Schieffer met this year's Cherry Blossom Queens, representing Japan and America at the Embassy.

Ambassador Promotes U.S. Beef

March 29 - Ambassador Schieffer visited a Seiyu supermarket in Tokyo in an event to promote the safety of U.S. beef. He spoke to the media and enjoyed some delicious beef right there in the shop.

Ambassador Opens New Tokyo American Center

March 7 - Ambassador Schieffer joined the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the opening of the new office of Tokyo Amerian Center. Ms. Kuniko Inoguchi, a member of the House of Representatives, and Mr. Shinichi Nishimiya, Director-General, North American Affairs Division, MOFA, also attended the ceremony.
