Dear Ichiro:

It was with great joy that I heard of your 258th hit this season. Congratulations to you on a record-breaking year that has captivated the attention of baseball lovers in America, Japan and throughout the world.

Your accomplishments this season - as in the past - are an inspiration to many people from both sides of the Pacific Ocean, and I genuinely believe what you have accomplished in baseball has contributed to bringing the people of our two countries closer together.

Again, congratulations on a remarkable record, and best wishes for your continued success.

  Sincerely,

Howard H. Baker, Jr.
