PRESS RELEASE

Ambassador Baker Authorizes Disbursal of $50,000 to Aid Earthquake Victims

October 25, 2004

At 3:15 p.m. today, Ambassador Baker spoke with Chief Cabinet Secretary Hosoda to express the sympathy and concern of United States for the victims of the recent earthquakes in Niigata and to offer assistance to those dealing with the immediate aftermath of this disaster.

Recalling the Japanese people's generosity after the 1989 earthquake in San Francisco, the Ambassador authorized the disbursal of USD fifty thousand in disaster assistance, as a symbol of the U.S. desire to do whatever it can to assist the government and people of Japan during this difficult time.

The Ambassador assured the Chief Cabinet Secretary that the United States stands ready to provide additional assistance to help ease the burden of the victims of this tragedy.
