Ambassador Schieffer Offers Condolences on Death of Former Prime Minister Hashimoto
July 3, 2006
We were saddened to hear the news of the death of former Prime Minister Ryutaro Hashimoto on July 1. Our condolences go out to his family. As Prime Minister, he played a key role in reshaping the post-Cold War security relationship with the United States, working to create new Guidelines for Japan-U.S. Defense Cooperation in 1997. Throughout his long career in politics and government, Mr. Hashimoto worked closely with many in the U.S. government who will remember him as a good friend who helped keep the U.S.-Japan relationship strong.
