Aug. 18 - In Washington, D.C. on Aug. 16, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton gave a speech on "The Global Health Initiative: The Next Phase of American Leadership in Health Around The World." She emphasized that "global funding for development assistance for health is a nonpartisan issue ... from the heart of America." [Video] The same day, the State Department released its annual report on U.S. efforts to increase affordable and equitable access to safe drinking water in developing countries, noting that in fiscal year 2009, some 5.7 million people gained improved access to safe drinking water and 1.3 million gained improved access to sanitation as a result of USAID investments.
