Secretary of Energy Chu Visits Japan

April 2 - Following his participation in the Nuclear Security Summit in Seoul, U.S. Secretary of Energy Dr. Steven Chu visited Japan March 28-30. During his visit, he participated in the EU-Japan-U.S. Workshop on Critical Materials; met with Japanese leaders including the Foreign Minister, the Minister of Environment, and the Minister of Economy, Trade, and Industry; conducted a press briefing for Japanese journalists at the U.S. Embassy in Tokyo; and visited the Kashiwanoha "Smart City" in Chiba Prefecture.

Secretary Chu also had the opportunity to meet with U.S. servicemembers of the 374th Airlift Wing based at Yokota Airbase who were involved in supporting the Department of Energy's radiation monitoring efforts in the aftermath of the March 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and subsequent nuclear crisis at the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant.
