Statement by Ambassador John V. Roos on the Agreement between the U.S. and Japan to Expand Access to U.S. Beef

February 1, 2013

I am very pleased that the governments of the United States and Japan have agreed to expand access for U.S. beef and beef products in Japan. Starting today, February 1, more U.S. beef will be available to the people of Japan. This market expansion by Japan is a beneficial step for Japanese consumers, restaurants, and retailers who will be able to enjoy a more diverse selection of safe, delicious, and high-quality U.S. beef.

This is also positive news for American ranchers and beef companies, who will be able to better supply Japanese consumers with a wide range of products.

The agreement is the result of a tremendous amount of work by dedicated professionals on both sides of the Pacific, and is yet another example of the strong partnership between the United States and Japan. I would like to thank the Japanese Government for its efforts in achieving this landmark agreement, and I look forward to continued cooperation between our two countries in support of our agricultural sectors and our vital bilateral trade relationship.
