Statement by Ambassador Caroline Kennedy on the Death of Joan Mondale (1930-2014)

February 4, 2014

I am deeply saddened by the passing of Joan Mondale. I join her many friends around the world in offering my thoughts and prayers to Vice President and Ambassador to Japan Walter Mondale, and the entire Mondale family, at this difficult time. The people of Japan fondly recall her contributions to Japan's arts community.

Joan dedicated her life to public service and promotion of the arts. She was a devoted potter, and she became known affectionately as "Joan of Art" for her passionate support of the arts and promotion of mutual understanding through international cultural exchange.

Among her many enduring legacies is the beautiful artwork that adorns the Tameike-Sanno metro station near the U.S. Embassy in Tokyo. But her true monument lies in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to have been enriched by her friendship, intelligence, and grace.
