National Science Foundation Delegation Visits Japan

Three officials of the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) - Drs. Irene Qualters, Kevin Thompson, and William Chang - are currently in Japan for discussions with the Japan National Institute of Informatics (NII), the National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT) and other entities to address the growing importance of global sharing of research data and open science through coordination and partnership on research data infrastructure.

Dr. Qualters is the Division Director for the Division of Advanced Cyber Infrastructure where Dr. Thompson is a Program Director. Dr. Chang is accompanying them in his role as Regional Coordinator for East Asia and the Pacific programs and activities at NSF. The delegation will be in Tokyo on March 9.

The U.S. and Japan increasingly cooperate in many areas of Science and Technology that involve issues of research data sharing and infrastructure, a notable recent example being U.S.-Japan partnered investments in Big Data and Disaster Research. Both countries participate in international coordination bodies that are relevant to this topic, including the Research Data Alliance (RDA), the Global Research Council (GRC), and the International Group of Funding Agencies for Global Change Research (IGFA) Belmont Forum.

A key infrastructure element for data sharing is high performance networking that enables the movement of scientific data. Discussions in Japan will therefore include enhancing ongoing coordination between the two countries to promote research and education data networking capacity.
