Ambassador Kennedy and Under Secretary Gottemoeller Represent the U.S. at the 2015 Nagasaki Peace Memorial Ceremony

August 9, 2015

Ambassador Caroline Kennedy and Under Secretary for Arms Control and International Security Rose Gottemoeller will represent the United States of America at the Nagasaki Peace Memorial Ceremony on August 9, 2015.

Ambassador Kennedy first visited Nagasaki in 2013 where she planted North American dogwoods in the Nagasaki Peace Park, a gift from the American people under the auspices of the Friendship Blossoms Initiative. She first represented the United States at the Peace Ceremony in 2014.

Ambassador Kennedy wishes to express to the Japanese people that "Today as we mourn those who perished in Nagasaki and remember all of the victims of World War II, we recommit ourselves to working toward a world where all people can live in peace. In this year which marks 70 years since the end of World War II, the relationship between our two countries stands as a model of the power of reconciliation. The United States looks forward to continuing to work with Japan to advance President Obama's goal of realizing a world without nuclear weapons. I would like to thank the citizens of Nagasaki for inviting me to participate in their Peace Memorial Ceremony."
