Statement by Ambassador Caroline Kennedy on the Kumamoto Earthquake

April 19, 2016

As the Kumamoto earthquake relief efforts move into their fifth day, all Americans are praying for the safety and well-being of the victims and all those in the affected areas. We are inspired by the resilience of the people of Kyushu, the dedication of government officials, first responders and members of the JSDF, and the commitment of the Japanese NGO community to their fellow citizens.

We are grateful to United States Forces Japan for their prompt response in support of the JSDF and for the more than 20 tons of relief supplies and additional emergency equipment they have transported in the past two days. We are honored to be able to help our closest friend and ally.

I also want to encourage all Americans to register with the Embassy so that we may provide assistance and reassurance should any future emergencies arise. We hope you will enroll in the State Department's STEP program.

Our community will do all we can to help in the coming weeks and months.
